With the Shading icon button in the Panels bar selected (gray sphere, keyboard shortcut F5), on the far right of the second group of icon buttons is a very small blue and gray globe. Click this globe icon button, and a new Preview panel appears with a plain blue square. There are also World and Mist/Stars panels, among others (see Figure 6-41). In the Preview panel, a Blend button creates a gradient-filled background for your model; the Preview square updates as you click this button. In the Mist/Stars panel, clicking the Stars button creates an instant star field in Blender s world. Note that you can t see the currently set world in the main workspace while you re in Object or Edit mode, but it does affect the render preview.

The optional first argument can provide an xs:QName that is translated into the URI passed to the processor by appending the local name of the xs:QName as a fragment identifier on the namespace URI. There are two other optional arguments to the error() function: a string description of the error and a sequence that provides additional information. There are no constraints about how the processor deals with this information: Saxon 8.4 reports the description and ignores the third argument. If the render preview shows your model to be a little on the dark side, look at the position of Blender s default lamp and camera. Is the lighting source putting the camera side of the model in shadow Remember, the lamp can be selected and moved like any other object, with the 3D Transform Manipulator or free movement tool. As you move the lamp toward your model, notice how the effect of the lighting becomes brighter. After you select a lamp, a Lamp panel appears in the lower part of the Blender interface. Next to it is another Preview window, with buttons including Lamp, Spot, and Sun. Needless to say, the Sun button makes for much brighter lighting than either Lamp or Spot. The Spot and Sun lights are directional, as their names suggest, so rotating the lighting object affects how much light falls on any part of the model (see Figure 6-42).

The trace() function takes two arguments: a sequence and a message. When the processor evaluates the trace() function, it reports the message and the value of the sequence to the user and returns the sequence. The trace() function is most useful when you want to debug a particular piece of an XPath expression to see why it isn t giving you the value that you expect. For example, in TVGuide4.xsl, I use the following variable declaration for $Channels: <xsl:variable name="Channels" as="element(Channel)+"> <xsl:perform-sort select="trace(/TVGuide/Channel, 'sorting channels')"> <xsl:sort select="trace(avg(Program/@rating), ' average rating')" order="descending" /> <xsl:sort select="trace(xs:integer(Program[1]/@rating), ' first program rating')" order="descending" /> </xsl:perform-sort> </xsl:variable> Transforming TVGuide.xml with TVGuide4.xsl gives the messages shown in Figure 14-3. For each channel, I m told the element that s being sorted (via a path to that element) and the values of the sort keys that are used to sort them. Perhaps most valuably, I m also told the type of each of the values and of the elements that are being sorted, something which I can t get at with normal XSLT code.

It s harder to use the trace() function to report values that you don t use, or don t use in the form you want reported. For example, you couldn t use the trace() function in the $Channels variable declaration to provide the names of the channels (which would make the message easier to interpret) rather than a path to the channel. So while trace() is useful for quick debugging, <xsl:message> is more useful for user-oriented messages.
