This type of scan is also known as a ping sweep or ping scan because the ping utility utilizes ICMP echo requests to locate hosts. Attackers looking for targets often attempt use a ping sweep to find hosts that respond to ICMP echo requests, which identifies them as active devices on the network. Hosts that cannot determine the appropriate IP subnet mask for their subnet use the ICMP address mask request. This type of request is not typically used today because hosts are configured with their IP addresses and subnet masks locally or from Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) servers.
