Some might ask if quality becomes deeply integrated in the design, and developers create far fewer bugs, what will the test team do The truth is that finding bugs today might be too easy. In an organization where quality is inherent in the habits of everyone, the emphasis on the role of test moves away from finding massive numbers of defects to concentrating on emulating customer scenarios, peer review, and validation. There will still be bugs to find, but finding them will be a much bigger challenge than it is today. Testers will have the time to investigate complex integration scenarios and, unblocked by basic functionality issues, find a great number of the bugs that our customers find after release, removing much of the tremendous cost of hotfixes, updates, and service packs. Others from the test role (as well as from other disciplines) can begin to function in a quality assurance role. These individuals will analyze and implement process improvement, defect prevention techniques, and infrastructure, and be the ambassadors for quality thinking and a quality culture in their organization. Growth and development of this role could be a key part of building and evangelizing a quality culture that spans the company. More ideas on bug prevention, including root cause analysis and the need for a quality culture, are found in The Practical Guide to Defect Prevention (Microsoft Press, 2007), a book written by some of our testing colleagues at Microsoft.

What is happening behind the scenes is that the GPMC is really adding the Read and Apply Group Policy permissions for the group you added to this GPO. Note that you could also add an individual computer or user account to a security filter. While this is not a best practice, it may be useful for testing purposes to have a GPO only apply to a single computer or user. A common misunderstanding occurs regarding the difference between linking a GPO and security filtering it. A GPO must be linked to a container where the computer or user account of the intended targets reside. If I am trying to deploy per-computer security policy to all of the computers in my organization s marketing division, I will link my GPO to the Marketing OU. If, within the Marketing OU, a subset of computers needs a different security policy perhaps because they run a different operating system I can use security group filtering on a second GPO, also linked to that Marketing OU, to segregate those computers. It does not matter if the security group I used to filter with resides in an OU outside of the Marketing OU remember that Group Policy is only processed by user and computer accounts. Therefore, a security group can reside anywhere in Active Directory and still be used to filter Group Policy for a particular OU s computers or users. However, at this point you might realize that using security groups for certain kinds of filtering, including filtering by operating system, is a bit clunky. That is why we have WMI filtering.

So far I have discussed linking GPOs to control which users and computers process them, and I have discussed security group filtering to more finely control targets within the bounds of linking to sites, domains, and OUs Now let us look at the final mechanism for controlling Group Policy processing: the WMI filter WMI filtering was introduced first in Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP Unlike security group filtering, which requires you to place users and computers in groups to control Group Policy application, WMI filtering relies on the inherent Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) framework built into Windows since Windows XP to dynamically filter Group Policy application based on the hardware and software configuration of the computer and user being targeted WMI filtering requires knowledge of the WMI Query Language (WQL) Within Active Directory and using the GPMC you create WMI filters that contain a WQL statement.
